Technology Update March 1, 2023

Hello WISE users!

It’s been raining quite a bit this week here in Berkeley. We hope that you are doing well!

Last month, we added previews for the Peer Chat and Show Group Work activities. Peer Chat and Show Group Work are new features that we’ve been testing in classrooms and we hope to do another post soon to describe their functions in more detail.

We also worked with folks in Germany who are setting up their own customized version of WISE and with folks in South China Normal University who are updating their custom WISE instance to the latest version. We’re excited to work with them and see what they will do with WISE!

We read all your emails and do our best to address issues that you raise! Now we make sure that classmates’ names appear correctly in discussions or peer chat activities, even if they joined a unit after other students have already started working. We’ve also fixed a problem in the Thermodynamics Challenge unit where the grid activity wasn’t showing feedback right away.

Looking forward, we started discussing a new feature called “Dynamic Components”, where components (like Multiple Choice, Draw, Open Response, etc) are shown or hidden individually for each student, based on different conditions or their previous student work. For example, if a student chooses choice A in a multiple choice item, they will then see a Drawing component. If they choose choice B, they will then see a Match component. We think that this kind of flexibility will add more possibilities for engaging students and allow researchers to ask new questions.

Thanks for reading! We hope to update you again soon with more exciting news. Please let us know if you have any comments or questions.
