Students use WISE to investigate Monarch butterflies and build community garden!

In a project led by WISE collaborator and professor at Florida State University, Dr. Amal Ibourk, researchers partnered with a local 5th grade teacher to develop a custom WISE unit that investigates solar radiation, how greenhouse gases can impact the energy cycle when they trap more heat in the atmosphere, and the effects of rising temperatures on Monarch butterfly migration and habitats. Students learned about ways humans can positively impact their environment and help native species. As a culminating project, students built a community garden at their school that includes plants for butterflies to get nectar, for monarch larva to feed on, and that promote pollinators such as monarchs!
